Students Re-Build Website for City of Charlotte

Updated: Sep 25, 2022

Full-Stack Web Development is not an easy feat but a team of students were able to do so! While many of us have learned many technical skills, such as math, coding, or science, there aren't often many opportunities that allow us to apply them to real-world projects. These team of students (ranging from middle to high school) were able to use their web development skills and add a fresh new look to the City of Charlotte's Open Data Portal website.

The entire journey was a learning process, with moments that could be found nowhere else. Many of the students gained experience of a team, just like one in any industry, and now know effective collaboration techniques, process of feedback and editing, and error lookup.

One student, who focused on the front-end/CSS portion, detailed that at one point they accidently deleted a major portion of the CSS code, which completely messed up the design of the front-page. Thankfully, they had set up an external Notepad where they were storing the code and could paste it back into the source.

The City of Charlotte members were beyond impressed with the students' efforts and were grateful to have such a hardworking group be apart of the project.

Overall, this experience is something we hope, as Galeega, to continue and find similar opportunities for students! View the live site here: https://data.charlottenc.gov/
