Updated: Oct 31, 2021

Charlotte’s first ever High School Data Hackathon concluded this weekend with students from high schools across Charlotte participating in a virtual problem solving competition that involved using data to identify insights and analyses.

Organized by two students from Ardrey Kell High: Nalini Dutt (Founding President of Charlotte Hackathon Club) and Aditi Koratpallikar (Founding Vice President) the event attracted partnership and support from UNC Charlotte who provided the data set for the event, along with Duke Energy, Wells Fargo and Stratifyd who supported with their leaders as judges and speakers.

This two day event spanned across Saturday April 17th - Sunday April 18th where students also got to hear from Industry Experts on a career path in data science and get insights into the daily lives of leaders in that space. The event was kicked off by UNCC’s Data Science Executive Director, Dr. Hague and Interim Undergraduate Program Director, Dr. Berardinelli with students learning about the Data Science program offered in UNC Charlotte. A panel discussion was held with Fred Barnhill, IT Manager, Duke Energy and the students learnt about an interesting real-life data analysis initiative from Toma Kraft, Co-Founder, Stratifyd.

We feel that events like these bring our community together to create something tangible and also provides an opportunity for the student community to gain knowledge and thereby make informed choices for their undergrad education and eventual career.
